This 2-day seminar will introduce the three-dimensional curves of scoliosis, the methods used to assess them, and the physical and emotional effects these curves have on the body and on the individual as a whole.

Pilates with Scoliosis will provide detailed information on the symptoms, onset, causes, and treatment protocols for scoliosis.

Participants will learn how to modify and adapt exercises for different curve patterns, as well as explore the Mat and Apparatus Pilates repertoire specifically designed to optimize movement and conditioning for each individual scoliotic spine.

Biography:

Rika’s first and lifelong passion is movement. She discovered Pilates as a young dancer in the United Kingdom after being diagnosed with scoliosis.

She later moved to New York to study classical ballet, where she began incorporating regular Pilates sessions into her training, recognizing its potential for injury prevention and physical conditioning.

Rika went on to dance professionally with both the Atlanta Ballet and the Oklahoma City Ballet.

After retiring from her dance career, Rika returned to the United Kingdom and began her first Pilates teacher training certification. She later completed the BASI CTTC certification, which she considers one of the best decisions of her life.

Living with scoliosis has given Rika a unique understanding of the body’s intricate mechanics and movement patterns. Pilates became an empowering tool that enabled her to take control of her condition and improve symmetrical balance around an inherently asymmetrical spine.

Rika found her true inspiration when she began teaching others with scoliosis. She witnessed firsthand the immense value of Pilates and the potentially transformative effects it can have on those living with scoliosis. This inspired her to conduct extensive research on the subject and ultimately develop her advanced education course, Pilates for Scoliosis.

Rika is honored to be a BASI Faculty member, teaching alongside the phenomenal BASI UK team at The Pilates Clinic (Wimbledon). She is continually grateful to be part of the extraordinary BASI community around the world.
