This two-day seminar will introduce the three-dimensional curves of scoliosis, the methods for evaluating them, and the physical and emotional effects these curves have on the body and the person as a whole.

Pilates with Scoliosis will provide detailed information on the symptoms, onset, causes, and treatment protocol for scoliosis.

Participants will learn how to modify and adapt exercises for different curve patterns, as well as explore the repertoire on the mat and Pilates apparatus, specifically designed to optimize movement and conditioning for each unique scoliotic spine.

Biography:

Rika’s first and enduring passion in life is movement. She discovered Pilates as a young dancer in the UK after being diagnosed with scoliosis.

She then moved to New York to study classical ballet, where she began regularly incorporating Pilates classes into her training, recognizing its potential for injury prevention and body conditioning.

Rika danced professionally in the following years with the Atlanta Ballet and the Oklahoma City Ballet.
After retiring from her dance career, Rika returned to the UK and began her first certification as a Pilates instructor. She later attended and completed the BASI CTTC certification, which she considers one of her best life choices.

Living with scoliosis has given Rika a unique insight into the deep workings of the body and movement. Pilates has been an empowering tool for Rika, allowing her to gain control of her condition and improve symmetrical balance around a spine that is inherently asymmetrical. Rika found true inspiration when she began teaching others with scoliosis. She was also able to observe the immense value of Pilates and the potentially transformative effects it can have for those suffering from scoliosis. This led her to conduct in-depth research on the subject and ultimately create her advanced education course, Pilates for Scoliosis.

Rika is honored to be a BASI Faculty member, teaching alongside the phenomenal BASI UK team at The Pilates Clinic (Wimbledon). She is continually grateful to be part of the extraordinary BASI community worldwide.
